Discuss how can working conditions on the job site affect worker productivity?

Working conditions can make or break a project and its productivity. For instance, if rain/snow is consistently affecting the jobsite, then productivity will be decreased, especially at the start of a new project where there is no inside work to be completed. Workers cannot access the site easily and wet conditions make it difficult to conduct groundwork and concrete pours. Location of a jobsite will also affect productivity. Major cities where trade labor can be easily acquired will increase productivity of a jobsite while a remote site with little trades will decrease productivity. This is especially seen when labor must be imported into the project area. Ideal working conditions are gorgeous sunny days, but construction rarely never has to fight with weather and location.

2.     Discuss how swell or shrinkage can impact the estimate of soil quantity for backfill?

When natural state materials are removed during excavation, the earth is redistributed and contents begin to swell. This results in a volume that increases from what was originally removed. Meanwhile, if loose rock is placed into a new hole, the results will compact and shrink when backfilled. This means that additional rock will be required to fill the desired amount of the hole. I would be more concerned with shrinkage when backfilling, while swelling will just result in additional dirt needing to be allocated or removed from the site.

1. Discuss How can working conditions on the job site affect worker productivity

Small or little working space, limited storage space, and difficult delivery situations are some working conditions can affect work performance of a worker due to the difficulty of managing the resources. As we have experienced here at the job site, concrete guys have to wait for the iron-workers to finish their work in order for them to have access on the job site and able to do their job, this can affect the schedule process. Crane has to be removed from the building so concrete guys can start basing the ground floor.  Working conditions should be in favor of every worker to avoid any delay or low productivity of the workers.  A poor working condition can definitely affect worker productivity and also the schedule and time of completion.

2. Discuss how swell or shrinkage can impact the estimate of soil quantity for backfill?

When estimating the amount of cut and fill, the potential for soil shrinkage and swelling of material must be taken into account. Otherwise, volume calculations to and from the site will not be balanced.  Having balanced earthwork calculations represents lessened waste of soil or less amount of borrow required to be hauled onto the project. A waste or borrow amount from unbalanced earthwork is an added expense to the project.
